Social Studies

 

 

Introduction

Social Studies is the course that deals with the interrelationship between the individual and the social and physical environments. It draws from such discipline areas as history, geography, political science, economics and the social sciences.

The major goals of the Social Studies curriculum are

bullet

to help students to be responsible and knowledgeable citizens of their community, their country and the world.

bullet

to help students to develop an appreciation for, and a positive attitude toward, other cultures.

bullet

to help students to develop self-confidence and a feeling of self-worth.

The Social Studies consultant is expected to:

bulletassist schools in implementing curriculum (including work with individual teachers).
bulletprovide teachers and administrators with updated information about resources, including computer and Internet.
bulletprovide professional development sessions.
bulletprovide contact with Manitoba Education and Training specialists.
bulletmonitor museum programs such as Manitoba Museum, Dalnavert and the Children's Museum.
bulletserve as a contact with relevant community organizations.

The Social Studies consultant maintains contact with schools through information sent to Social Studies contact teachers in elementary schools and to Department Heads or Department Representatives in secondary schools.

The consultant also has responsibility in the area of Human Rights for Grade 7 through Senior 4.
