Bullying : Not just a guy thing.
Chatsworth, CA: AIMS Multimedia,
c2003. 1 videocassette (30 min.) + 1 discussion guide.
SUMMARY: School bullies are not always boys -- just ask Amy, a middle
school student who is mercilessly teased by fellow student Stacie and her
group of self-important girlfriends. Their idea of fun is to submit Amy to a
daily barrage of name-calling, mean tricks, and unfounded rumours. This
reduces Amy to tears, causes her to avoid other students and even to fear
coming to school. The nasty-as-they-wanna-be behaviors of Stacie and her
friends are contrasted with practical advice from teachers and student
counselors who discuss what bullying is, how targeted students can -- and
should -- take steps to end the harassment, and how being confronted about
their behavior is a positive event for the bullies themselves. Bullies may
not even perceive themselves as wrongdoers; when a targeted individual
confronts his or her tormentors it offers the bullies an opportunity to
effect a change in their own lives by stopping the negative behavior. When
Lita, another student, befriends Amy and coaches her through a successful
confrontation with Stacie, it leads to an emotionally dramatic turn-around
in the lives of both girls. The school's observance of a Bully-Free
Awareness Week provides a fitting framework for the story. Audience: IJ.
