SUMMARY:  A documentary about the fight against the toxic and degrading messages to women and girls that dominate the media. The program presents the leading authorities in the fields of psychology of women and girl discussing eating disorders, gender studies, violence against women, and media literacy -- and focuses their ideas on practical solutions and the best tactics for reclaiming our culture.  Audience:  JSA.  BOOKING # VR3743

Beyond the looking glass: Body image and self-esteem.  New York: Hourglass Productions, c2002.  1 videocassette (32 min.).
SUMMARY:  Today's young people are inundated with messages, often from the media, telling them how they should look and act that can be damaging to their self-esteem. "Accept who you are and be proud" is the message in this program. SUMMARY:  Concerns about body image affect young males as well as females. This program shows the relationship between body image and self-esteem, the factors that contribute to a negative or positive body image, risky behaviours associated with attempts to improve body image and alternatives for improving body image.

SUMMARY:  This investigation uncovers the sexualization of young girls as they are bombarded with ads, media programs and messages urging them to mimic their favourite pop idols and scantily-clad models.  This fast-paced feature follows three tweeners, revealing how they're being manipulated and why they need to look sexy. SUMMARY:  Bombarded by media images of reed-slender models, buff celebrities, and large-muscled athletes, legions of young people are reporting themselves dissatisfied with their looks and shape.  Using interviews with real teens, this program explores the reality of how most people actually look, how young people respond to media images, and how they can maintain a positive self-image.  Examines the dangers of anorexia, bulimia, overeating, and the pressures to use muscle growth-promoting hormones. SUMMARY:   Teaches what is meant by body image and why it is important to teenagers, and explains the connection between body image and self-esteem.  The program tells the story of a teenager preoccupied by his body image who is offered steroids to pump up his image for his girlfriend.  The negative effects of steroid use is discussed.  Audience: S.
