The Winnipeg School Division:
Human Rights Curricula
Background:
Since 1987 when the Board of Trustees mandated the teaching of Human Rights
units in Language Arts and Social Studies the Winnipeg School Division
No. 1 has been a leader in curriculum and unit development in this area.
Workshops to train new teachers to use Human Rights materials are given
annually. The following units have been developed and are being taught in
schools in The Winnipeg School Division No. 1.
- Grade 7 Human Rights (Revised 1998)
The Grade 7 Human Rights Teacher's Guide presents lessons and activities which are
aligned with the outcomes of the new Manitoba Curriculum. The kit, provided to
the
Winnipeg School Division No. 1 schools, includes 20 novels to be used in a reading-writing
workshop approach. Teachers using the revised kit have been enthusiastic about their
students' responses to the new materials.
The original grade 7 unit focused on the Canadian Japanese experience with in-class learning
approaches. Due to copyright concerns, the Canadian Japanese unit may be used only within Division
No. 1. The revised teacher's guide, Human Rights Kit: Grade 7 English Language Arts

- Identities: Grade 8 English Language Arts Human Rights Unit New
2001
The Identities kit consists of a binder and novels,
teaching resources and materials provided to all Winnipeg School Division No.
1 schools with grade 8 students.
The binder contains detailed lesson plans, a reading workshop approach to
teaching literature and an inquiry project as well optional units on media,
debating and fairy tales are curriculum outcomes included in the teacher's
guide. The unit is aligned with the outcomes of the grades 5-8
curriculum.

Due to copyright, available only to schools within Division No. 1.
The S1 unit is currently being revised to align with provincial English
Language Arts outcomes.
- Emerging Aboriginal Voices : Senior 2 (Revised
1998)
The S2 kit Emerging Aboriginal Voices provided to all
Winnipeg School Division No. 1 schools, contains a teacher's guide, novels and
teaching resources.
