Students can either draw their own
leaf or use the sample provided leaf.bmp
If students are drawing their own leaf instruct the students to
make the leaf small enough that there will be room on the screen
to make a pile of leaves. When demonstrating the lesson at
the beginning of class show a sample appropriate size.
If you are using the leaf.bmp file you will need to save it to
the 2 Student Read Only Drive. Students can then go to
File/Open and go to the 2 Student Drive and retrieve the file
leaf.bmp. With young students I (or older students) preload the
leaf.bmp file and with Windows 95 either minimize the file to the
task bar or have students later go to the Documents folder
and open up the leaf.bmp in Windows Paint directly.
Once the sample leaf is done, students are shown how to use
the Cutting tools to draw a box around the leaf . Students
are then shown how to go to Edit/Copy to take a
"picture" of the leaf to store on the computer's
clipboard. Students are told they only need to take the picture
once because the computer will store it in its memory.
Students then use Edit/Paste to make more leaves. As they
make each leaf, students are instructed to move the leaves
to the bottom of the screen to make a pile of leaves.
This file is done as a computer activity and we do not print it.
Extensions: You can choose other pictures to practice this
concept of Edit Copy/ Edit Paste. Using two pictures
students are instructed to go again to Edit Copy to take a copy
of the second picture. Students can also flip and rotate
the leaves.
