This activity is a one card
HyperStudio activity which is contained in the file Objects.stk.
This file should be stored in a shared/read only directory on the
server ie. 2Student. This stack is available by clicking on
this link OBJECTS.STK.
For younger Students such as Nursery and Kindergarten the card is
opened ahead of time by older students or the teacher.
Remember that in HyperStudio that Control-M will remove the title
bar so the card is fully blank for the students.
Students in Grade One used a recording sheet to record their
"finds". There is a template for the recording
sheet obj_rec.pub but you could design your own. It is
simply an 8 square grid. This grid should be handed out to
students ahead of time as they will record on it. This publisher
file is available by clicking on OBJ_REC.PUB.
Open HyperStudio. File/Open Stack and open the
Objects.stk from the shared/read only
directory. Press Control M to remove the title bar at the
top of the card. Students are instructed to randomly click
on the card till an animation appears.
Nursery/Kindergarten students continue clicking to find 8
different objects. Students can be stopped and asked
periodically what they have found so far. This will inspire
the other students to keep looking.
Grade One students are asked to stop when they find an object and
record pictorially on their grid when they find something.
Again students can be stopped and asked periodically what
they have found so far. This will inspire the other
students to keep looking. Students who finish first are asked to
write the words below the pictures.
Near the end of the period when most have found all 8 Objects,
the students are put into pairs and told to test one another on
finding the Objects by saying "Find me the door" and
then the partner has to remember spatially where the animation
was on the card and show their partner.
As an extension teacher may wish to save animations that are
particular to a curriculum unit such as animals or
transportation. HyperStudio has many animations and there
are lots of animations available on the Web. Older Students
could design curriculum specific animations for a younger grade
using an animation program like Microsoft Gif Animator and the
Windows Paint program.
To create your own card with animations in HyperStudio go to
File/New Stack and Title Your Card Appropriately. To add an
Animation Go to Objects Add a Button. Choose the hidden button
and place it on the card. Click on the Background and then
under Actions Choose "Play Animation". Choose
Disk Library. And follow the on-screen instructions to
complete your animation and say Done. When making
subsequent buttons try to place them far apart and in obscure
places on the card so students have to experiment with clicking
and finding. (For more information on making animations refer to
the HyperStudio Manual.)
