Details:

Before coming to the computer lab students are asked to carefully study the layout of their classroom and work out the N-E-S-E directions in their room. (If a classroom is not set up at right angles, introduce the concepts of NE, SW, etc.)

Students open the Windows Paint Program and if little previous experience, they spend some time practicing drawing straight lines, rectangles, squares, circles and ovals.

Students are then asked to draw a rectangle representing their classroom and to type in the directions of North, East, South and West. They are then instructed to draw a map of their room looking down from the ceiling and to keep the objects in the room in proportion as much as possible.  If time students also labeled the objects in the room map.
