Hand out a map of Canadas provinces and territories.
Have students open the "Canada1" that has been installed on the server. (WSD#1
S:\2Student) Once opened, students should immediately save their work to drive T:
(WSD#1 T:\2Teacher). The students should save their work after each province has
been placed in the correct position. (Ctrl+S is the key combination to save quickly.) To
make more room on the desktop, remove the color palette from the bottom of the screen
(Windows - Paintbrush: View-Palette, Windows 95 - Paint: View-Color Box). The provinces
and territories are displayed in a puzzle fashion on the screen. Students should use the
selection tools to select a province or territory and move it to the correct location.
(First move the Northwest Territories and then align Manitoba directly below.) Once all
the provinces have been placed, students may change the colors to their own liking. To
bring back the color box, click on View-Palette in Windows Paintbrush or View-Color
Box in Windows 95 Paint. If changing colours, zoom in on Northwest Territories,
Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia first. Use the selection tool and place the
completed map at the top centre of the page. REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN. Make a text box and
type PROVINCES and TERRITORIES of CANADA. Use the Print Preview feature to see if the
title is centred on the top of the map. If not, use the selection tool to move the title
to the appropriate position. Use the rectangle tool to create a box that will later be
filled with color. Select the box you have just made and make a copy of it. (EDIT, COPY,
EDIT, PASTE) Once you have pasted one copy of the rectangular box, you can just click on
paste to make the remaining boxes. Place six boxes on the left hand side of the screen.
Use the text tool to label in the provinces and territories. If the words or boxes are
crooked then use the selection tool to align them. Make six more boxes on the right side
of the screen and complete the legend. Fill the legend boxes with the color that
corresponds to each province and territory.
It is important to remember to include Nunavut in this activity.
Canada1

Description:
This lesson is the same format as Canada1, but it is more challenging in the way that
students must identify the province/territory and flip it to its correct position before
moving it to the correct location.
Details:
All pieces of the puzzle are flipped. Students use the selection tools to select a
province/territory. To flip an object - Windows - Paintbrush, select an object, click on
Pick, flip horizontal or flip vertical; Windows 95 - Paint - Menu - Image/Flip/Rotate -
Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical.
