Details:

There are charts available for the syllabics for those who do not know them. Choose one particular sign-in word, e.g. "syl" so the students can use that same one every time they want the syllabics. Go to the Icon Maker. Choose the appropriate tool to make each of the symbols; check the sound; if it does not sound the way it should click on Go and go to Speech Editor; edit the sound then store in My Words box. The next time the students sign in as "syl" the icons will be found in the "My Words box"; the student clicks on the icon, the icon will appear and the sound is there.

Extensions: (Literature Links, Further Explorations, etc.)

Students do not have to speak Ojibwe or Cree to have fun with syllabics; for example the symbols LL make the sound mama and CC makes tata or dada. They can try writing their names using the syllabics.
