Details:
To develop a calendar for September in either the Cree or Ojibwe language, use the
Paintbrush program. Create a calendar frame by using the shape tool. Have students type in
the necessary items for the calendar on the outside of the frame. Students can then cut
and carry the items so that within each frame for the days of the week, the name of the
month, the days of the month, the correct information is inserted.
Extensions:(Literature Links, Further Explorations, etc.)
This can also be used for French, Ukrainian, or any other heritage language. Syllabics are also used wherever they are available. When doing the Aboriginal calendars, the teacher can clarify that the Aboriginal names for the months are all tied in with what is happening in nature:
September - Ojibwe Moozoog-gaa-wiinjidiwaad Giizis Moose-mating/Rutting Moon
Cree Takwaki Pisim Fall Moon
(Sunday the first day of the week has already been cut and carried to its frame.)
