The template file Rainforest.pub should be saved in a 2 Student Read Only File.  When using this file with Grade 2 students I usually preload the file on each computer and then it can easily be brought up later by the students by going to the Documents Folder off the Start Menu. To download the file Rainforest.pub, click on this link Rainforest.pub.

When working with Grade 2 students this activity usually takes 3 computer times. After the file is open I sit the students at the demonstration computer and review how to make the screen larger and smaller by clicking on the plus and minus (take away) signs at the bottom of the screen.  I tell them that the large boxes are the picture boxes in which we will put pictures of Rainforest Animals and the smaller boxes are text boxes where we will type the animal's names.  We then review what are Rainforest Animals with a list that was premade by the students in the classroom and recorded on chart paper. The students are then asked to click on the first picture box.  Go to Insert/Clip Art, Click on the Animals category and scroll through the clip art looking for Rainforest Animals.  When they find one they are asked to put up their hand and show me.  We spend the rest of the first class just looking through the clip art.  We do not save anything at this lesson.

At the second lesson students are shown how to click after the words Date and Name to insert their information.  The process of inserting pictures into the picture boxes is reviewed.  This class is spent inserting six different pictures.  While the students are inserting the pictures I begin a word bank on chart paper with the names of the animals they have chosen.  This file is saved at the end of the lesson.

In the third lesson students are shown how to click on the text boxes so the handles are showing and how to scroll down to find the boxes.  Using the word bank of animal names the students insert the appropriate name under each picture box.

Grade 2's at our school have used this template for Pioneer and Olden Days pictures. Grade 1's have used a 4 box template for Transportation pictures.
