Bibliothèque LaVérendrye School Library

Teacher-Librarian: Mme.Darcie Kiene

LaVérendrye School Library is staffed by a part-time teacher-librarian, part-time clerical staff, and parent volunteers. The bilingual collection is managed by a an automated system. The library houses approximately 6200 books, of which about 3100 are in French, and the remaining 2900, in English.

Our library is located on the second floor of the school. We have recently completed major renovations to enlarge and upgrade the physical space, to accommodate the demands of becoming an Information Centre in the area of technology, and to support a  Parent Centre for information and meetings.

Book Exchange

Students visit the library once per school cycle to borrow and exchange books. Each student is allowed to borrow 2 books or periodicals at any one time.

Students are expected to be responsible library users; that is, to return their books on time and in good condition. If materials are lost or damaged, parents are informed of its cost and are requested to make a donation towards its replacement.

School Library Program

The goal of the Library Program is to develop a love of reading and to create lifelong learners.

All classes are scheduled for a library period, once per cycle. There are two main components of the program; namely, a Literary and Cultural Appreciation model for the students from Grades 1 to 3, and an Information Literacy component, for grades 4 to 6. There is, of course, some of each of these two components for students at all levels.

Literary and Cultural Appreciation

During this time students are exposed to a wide variety of literary genres. The children learn to make predictions, to make connections with their own life experiences, and to explore similarities and differences among peoples and cultures. They are made aware that stories follow a pattern and have certain predictable outcomes. They are guided to realize that certain universal values are inherent to all cultures.
