Principal's Message
Welcome to King Edward Community School Website. We are very proud of
our student’s accomplishment and hope that you will enjoy perusing our
site!
King Edward Community School endeavours to provide a safe and
supportive learning environment for all students. We believe that children
live up to what is expected of them, or children mirror what adults think
of them. Therefore, our staff put tremendous effort into setting high
expectations and providing learning experiences that encourage students to
reach toward higher goals.
Our monthly school assembly themes are based on the seven Ojibway
teachings; Faith, Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Caring, Sharing and Courage.
Each grade level group is responsible for providing a representation of
that teaching. Classrooms then spend the entire month focusing on and
practicing a particular teaching. The principal then selects four students
who demonstrate understanding of the teaching from each grade group and
publicly acknowledges their accomplishment. Another aspect of our
assemblies is the hall of frame award. Each classroom teacher selects
three students from their classrooms to showcase a work of academic
excellence. Students' work is displayed at the assembly and later in
frames on hallway walls. All students are expected to contribute to and
promote a safe, supportive learning environment.
Students and staff at King Edward School are involved in a number of
initiatives intended to promote the arts in schools. We are involved in a
project titled, Learning Through The Arts. The first year of the
project involved two grade levels, the second year involved four grade
levels and finally next year the project will extend to all students in
the school. We are pleased to be a part of this program as its objective
is to increase students' capacity to learn and retain knowledge in the
core academic disciplines through music, drama, dance and visual arts
activities. Each academic year our students and staff have the opportunity
to work with three artists for three different sessions. Prior to
arriving, artists meet with teachers to decide the topic and area of the
provincial curricula they will deliver to students for that session. In a
short period of time students and staff are exposed to a variety of
creative ways of addressing learning outcomes. The experiences Artists
provide allow students to engage themselves in activities that stretch and
connect their current learning. We look forward to the school wide
experience next year! We are also currently constructing a tile mural
project with Bud Gilles a local artist through Manitoba Artists in the
school. Teachers have also incorporated Aboriginal Art, such as soapstone
carving or quilt making into regular programming.
King Edward Community School is also involved in a number of other
additional projects to complement regular elementary school programming.
The Open Doors Project operates a literacy and basic computer course out
of the school. And students can take advantage of a City of Winnipeg,
Parks and Recreation Program for two hours after school, three nights a
week and the Lighthouse-Kids Time project runs Friday evening and Saturday
afternoon. Further information on these may be found by clicking on
"handbook" on the menu bar.
Respectfully,
Val Georges
