In 2000, as a Millennium Project, the staff
decided to improve our outdoor courtyard. Thanks to a grant from the
children’s Heritage Fund, Winnipeg school division, the whole school began
building a patio, sidewalk and rock bed. Miniature cedars and junipers were
planted in the rock bed. Picnic tables and benches were added. Large planters
were filled with annuals in the school colours.
In
2002 additional funding came from the City of Winnipeg and Toyota / Evergreen
learning grounds. Students planted a perennial garden of native grasses and
plants. Professional advice from Helping Hands produced an overall site plan
including fruit trees.
In
2003, grants from Manitoba Hydro and the Manitoba Government were used to plant crab-apple
and chokecherry trees.
Today
this formerly undeveloped space is used as an outdoor classroom. This
educational, naturalization project is a legacy for our students.
