The Primary Language Centre is for children in Grades 1-3:

* who live in The Winnipeg School Division

* who have severe speech and language difficulties with one or more of the following:

* understanding and following directions and/or discussions

* telling experiences and stories in sequence

* finding the right word or phrase

* asking questions

* speaking clearly

In the Primary Language Centre:

* students learn through hands-on activities

*each child has his or her own written plan with goals and objectives

* students build self-confidence as they learn ways to communicate

* students receive intensive help with speech and language

The Primary Language Centre staff meets regularly as a team to discuss each child's progress. The staff meets regularly with parents to discuss and update the child's Individual Education Plans.

Referrals may be made:

*by classroom and resource teachers in the Winnipeg School Division #1 in cooperation with the Child Guidance Clinic clinician and with the    knowledge and consent of parents.

* from other special education programs within The Winnipeg School Division #1

* throughout the school year, preferably before the end of March, prior to the next school year.

Make referrals to:

New students who would be considered for the Primary Language Centre are those who have had in-school interventions at the classroom , resource and clinic levels and who require a more enabling environment.

Transportation may be provided, with the approval of the Special Education Department.

Each Centre has:

* one full time teacher

* one part time speech /language pathologist

* on full time instructional aide

* other Child Guidance Clinic and school based personnel as required.

Program Placement Options

Placement options are discussed annually at the Spring Progress Review Meeting.Decisions are made with the Primary Language Centre team, home school team, Child Guidance Centre and parents.

Visitations

Visits to observe the program may be made by contacting the school principal directly or the Special Education Department. It is advisable that teachers and clinicians visit together.
