Students in high school register for summer school for various reasons. If a student fails a subject it provides an opportunity to repeat a course and gain the credit that was not achieved during the year. Others will attend summer school to improve their grade in a particular subject. Some may choose to go to summer school to earn extra credits. The information below is very general and the reference to fees is approximate as the fee schedule for the various summer sessions had not been established at this printing. Courses are offered if there is sufficient enrollment.
Winnipeg School Division Summer School
Winnipeg School Division Summer School has two types of summer courses - Repeater and Non-Repeater. The repeater courses run for 2 hours a day either 8:30-10:30 or 10:30-12:30. In order to register as a repeater the student must have a final mark in that subject in June. That means a student who drops a course before June 30th cannot register as a repeater. The student must present a report card indicating June standing. It is possible to take two courses as a repeater provided they are available at different time slots.
The non-repeater course is for students who have never taken the subject or have dropped the course before the end of June. These classes are scheduled from 8:30-12:30 so that it is impossible for a student to take two courses as a non-repeater.
Grade 9 - Grade 12 summer school usually takes place at Kelvin High School or St. John's High School.
Nelson McIntyre Summer School - 3 weeks in July (English & French Immersion)
This program is regarded as upgrading only and not thorough coverage of the material. The fee is approximately $100.00 for a course. Courses are scheduled in 2 hour time slots throughout the day, and students must have a minimum June mark of 35% to register.
University of Winnipeg Collegiate Division - 6 weeks
Courses are offered at the Collegiate in most academic high school subjects. Courses are scheduled in 2 hour time slots throughout the day. Fees are approximately $250.00 per credit and may be taken by students to upgrade marks or on a non-repeater basis.
