Collège Churchill Program/Credit System

Students receive their high-school standing through the credit system. A credit is granted upon the successful completion of a 110 hour course (half-credit courses are available, requiring 55 hours of course work).

Under the new four-year Secondary program of studies Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 a minimum of 28 credits are needed to gain high-school standing (diploma) in Manitoba. At Collège Churchill, there are also French language requirements needed in order to obtain a French Immersion Diploma or Certificate.

Students registering at Collège Churchill must successfully complete at least 21 total credits in French language instruction over the four (4) years of their Secondary program. This represents 75% target language programming, as mandated by the School Division and the Province of Manitoba for “Milieu” schools.

Students who have successfully completed the 21 credits of instruction in the French language as well as the general requirements for High School standing will receive their Regular Diploma as well as their French Immersion Diploma. Students who, for one reason or another, cannot complete their 21 credits, but who still have satisfied all other requirements will be eligible for an Immersion Certificate.

A full timetable consists of 9 credits in Grade 9. Therefore, a student could conceivably complete more credits than required.  Given current situations at post-secondary institutions, students who have gone beyond the minimal requirements in their high school careers are sometimes looked upon more favourably.

Collège Churchill shares a building with Churchill High School. This allows a student access to some English language programming which would not otherwise be available to Milieu students. With a bit of careful planning, a student can thus graduate with 21 credits of French instruction and up to 11 further credits in English language programming. Briefly, it is our belief that such a student would indeed be functionally bilingual, able to pursue further studies or join the workforce in either or both of our official languages. Research across Canada shows that these students tend to be extremely well prepared for post-secondary studies as well as having advantageous skills for the work-force. They are also in a better position to more easily become competent in a third or fourth language.

Dual credits - Post Secondary Credits and Senior Years

Students in Manitoba can take a first year university course and earn credits which will be recognized both at the university and as a Grade 12 credit towards graduation.

The Winnipeg School Division in collaboration with the universitites of Winnipeg and Manitoba offered courses to students beginning in 2002-03 at a reduced rate in first year Psychology and Calculus.  The courses were offered in three high schools after school hours and on Saturdays.

For details of the courses being offered for next year contact your school counsellor or administration.
