Arts Plastiques -ARTF 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G

The senior high art program focuses firstly on the development of basic artistic skills and understanding in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, poetry and art history. Secondly, the intention of the program is that at the 3G and 4G levels, students will begin to undertake some independent projects, expressive of individual talents and interests. The exploration of new and experimental art forms is particularly important at this level.

All students are expected to participate in classroom assignments and all students are expected to keep a sketch book of personal work.

Field trips are arranged as frequently as possible to acquaint students with the work of our local artistic community.

Arts Dramatiques - DRFY 1G

Emphasis will be put on the practical aspect:

  1. basic techniques of creative dramatics through games, exercises in pantomimes and improvisations.

  2. skills to work cooperatively with others

  3. communication skills

  4. play writing and acting

  5. sound effects, lights, costumes and stage props

Evaluation of students is done on the student’s desire and ability to be creative, work done in groups and independently, participation in discussions, leadership skills and striving to excel in speaking French.

Arts Dramatiques - ARDF 2G, 3S, 4S

These courses use the basic elements of theatre to develop the learner’s skills in relaxation, concentration, listening, perception, memory, observation and stimulation. Students will develop techniques in oral and physical expression.

While the core of the program is the development of acting skills, emphases will also be given to the interpretative skills of the director, and the production skills such as sound/lighting, stage management, sets and costumes.   Students will develop their French language skills and put them into practice by writing a play in French as a co-operative activity.  This course develops that students’ dramatic resources through an exploration of the nature of dramatic activity.

* Band/Concert Band - BANR 1G, 2G, 3S, 4S (1.0 credit)

Prerequisite:  Minimum of 1 previous year in band or permission from band instructor.

A performance class, the band plays at festivals and concerts throughout the year.

Evaluation Format:  Playing tests - 50 % / Theory - 30% / Daily Work - 20%

NOTE:  THE WINNIPEG SHOOL DIVISION LOANS INTRUMENTS FREE OF CHARGE.  HOWEVER, THERE IS A $20.00 PARTICIPATION FEE FOR SUPPLIES.

* Choir - CHOR 1G

This course is a continuation of the skills learned in Grade 7 and 8 Choir.  There is an emphasis on Sight Reading, Ear Training, and proper vocal technique.  Students will develop vocal independence and confidence.  S1 Choir will perform independently as well as with the Senior Choir.  Credi will be based on the student's ability to demonstrate skills learned in class.

*  Choir - CHOR 2G, 3S, 4S

Prerequisite:  S1 Choir or Band or permission from Choir Teacher

*Jazz Band 10G, 20G, 30S, 40S - JABR 1G, 2G,3S,4S

Recommended Prerequisite:  A minimum of 2 years band experience.  Must also be registered in Concert Band or receive permission from Band instructor.

A performance style class in the style of Jazz.  Musicians will study swing and improvisation styles.  Evaluation format:  Playing Tests - 80% / Daily Work - 20%.

NOTE:  The Winnipeg School Division loans instruments free of charge.  However, there is a $20.00 participation fee for supplies.

*Vocal Jazz Choir 10G, 20G, 30S, 40S (VOJR 1G, 2G, 3S, 4S)

Recommended Prerequisiste:  Must also be registered in Choir 10G, 20G, 30S, or 40S (audition required)

This choir is a small auditioned ensemble focusing on technically demanding vocal repertoire.  Students will focus on voice production ans sight reading skills through a wide variety of choral styles, including jazz, pop and classical.  Vocal Jazz is involved in various concerts and festivals throughout the year.  Participation in performances is mandatory.  Students will advance their vocal and choral skills, including the ability or read music, harmonize and improvise.  Students will further improve their vocal technique and stage presence.
