In order for Champlain School to be a safe and positive place for your children to learn and socialize, the following guidelines have been established. Staff, students, and parents must work together to ensure the effectiveness of this plan.

General Rules and Expectations

  1. Students will bring all necessary supplies to school as required.
  2. Students are expected to arrive at school no earlier than fifteen minutes before classes begin, and should remain outside until the bell, or until the supervising adult allows entry.
  3. No food or drinks, expect lunches, will be brought into the school. Students may bring a healthy snack for recess — no POP or CANDY.
  4. Students will keep our school and the grounds free of litter.
  5. Students will follow traffic safety rules and cooperate with school patrols.
  6. Students will follow classroom rules as outlined by their teachers.

Behaviour Rules for Hallways & Stairways

  1. Students are expected to enter and leave the building in a quiet, orderly manner using designated exits and entrances. Students will not run in the school.
  2. Students will walk on the right hand side of the hall and stairs, and use quiet voices.

Playground Rules

  1. Students will obey, and respect the adults on duty.
  2. Students will not leave the playground during recess or once they have arrived on the playground in the morning or after lunch.
  3. Students will play safely, fairly, and cooperatively on the playground. Contact sports such as tackle football or play-fighting are not allowed.
  4. When the bell rings, students will line up immediately, enter the building quickly and quietly and go directly to their classrooms.
  5. Students will solve problems in a respectful manner and ask an adult for assistance if required.
  6. Students will not bring toys, skateboards, roller blades, walkmans, etc. to school.

Positive Consequences for Appropriate Behaviour

  1. Teachers will consistently encourage and praise students for their appropriate behaviour.
  2. On occasion, teachers may provide whole class rewards or incentives to encourage and reward a behavioural goal.
  3. Teachers will inform parents through notes and phone class home, of the child’s positive behaviour.
  4. Teachers will inform the principal of students who deserve special recognition for their efforts and accomplishments.
  5. Students’ efforts and accomplishments will be recognized at monthly assemblies.

Range of Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviour

Consequences will be provided on the basis of the individual needs of the student in social, personal and educational development, the degree of the problem, and the ability of the student to understand and handle the consequences. Several minor offences may lead to a major consequence, however, due to the severity of the behaviour, a major consequence may be used immediately.

  1. Teacher/Student conference to clarify expectations and develop strategies to change behaviour.
  2. Classroom time-out
  3. Partner classroom for time-out
  4. Phone call home (no phone—student taken home and brought back)
  5. Parent/School Meeting (may involve school counsellor, developing a behaviour plan)
  6. Loss of privileges (choice time, outdoor recess, field trip, extra-curricular)
  7. In-School suspension
  8. Out of school suspension (1 to 5 days) parent/guardian must accompany child upon return to school.
  9. Outside Agency involvement.
