Canadians are not a warlike people.

Yet when the trumpets sound and the cannons roar, we have, throughout our history, answered the call. The men and women memorialized here stand as symbols for a nation shaped by conflict and strengthened through sacrifice.

It is war, as much as peace, that unites us; for valour knows no bounds.
They belong to us all, these remarkable figures from our past; the Mohawk war chief who fought to secure a tract of land for his dispossessed people; the voltigeur who drove back the invaders and saved a city; the Loyalist housewife who braved the swamps to sound an alarm; the failed real estate salesman who became our greatest general. In this scattered land, they provide the glue that holds us together.
From the dark scarps that overlook the Atlantic to the tattered islands in the Pacific mists, these are the heroes who have helped give us shape and purpose throughout four centuries.

We have been called a cool people, the product of a frosty environment, and it is true that we do not indulge in the hot-blooded emotion that distinguishes those from warmer climes. Overblown celebration is not our style, but we know, deep in our hearts, that without the hard example provided by the kind of Canadian remembered here, this country would not dare call itself a nation.

Canadian Battlefields Foundation has a presentation titled "Route of Honour" that details the routes and critical battles fought by Canadian serving in World War II. Over the past ten years, the Canadian Battlefields Foundation has created a Route of Honour/La Route d’Honneur, literally a roadmap, of heroic liberation across Europe.

Historica 'Minutes" - Read the summary in this main web page for Military. Canada is internationally recognized for its role as a peacekeeping nation. But Canadian soldiers have seen their share of battle and their heroism is not forgotten. View these Historica Minutes 'as seen on TV' and read the article.

View and Respond educational activity. Look at these two resources. Art creates an impression that the artist or photograph presents as a micro story of one instant in time. Viewing multiple images from different persons expands our range of understanding. Resource 1: Images of Canada - Canada at War view 93 images. Black and white photographs give the viewer a special reflection on the setting and emotions of people as they present a story captured in a second of life. If is up to the viewer to complete the story before the image and after the image.
For a project, you may wish to tell the story of the image and what you think happened just before and after the image was taken.
Resource 2: Canvas of War view paintings to take a tour or go to the list of artists.
How is the saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words' helped your understand the sacrifice of thousands?
For a project, you may wish to express your new understanding of what is important to you on Remembrance Day and how one or more paintings helped you in this.
