In Canada, many families have different experiences when older generations are asked to retell experiences from "the war".   First, for many it connects the relative to World War II, and for a very few, World War I.  For others, it connects to more recent involvement in troubled areas of the world on other continents.  For a small group today, it means active deployment to a new conflict or war zone - some have been to many sites in the last 10 years. All will have memories of real life experiences.

From the web page, "What did you do in the war Grandma?", many  ideas can be created to address the Canadian situation of the school's families.  Some of our Winnipeg schools have a high percentage of "military families" while others have a high percentage of World War II veterans.

Within your school, their is an opportunity to develop a series of projects based on the general question - "Do you remember the war Grandpa?"

There needs to be a special sensitivity towards the person when planning the interview questions, the format for the interview, the attitude of the respondent with the topic and access to personal items and photographs.  For some students, it may be the first time Grandpa has discussed memories with anyone in decades and their parents will be surprised at the details and points of view now expressed by their dad.

The students need to plan note-taking and interview skills, visual imaging skills as they listen to the respondent and IT skills as they plan the project for presentation.  Make sure that any personal information created in the project is presented and approved by the respondent before publishing.

Please submit links to your school web site page for this project.
