Carpathia School Library Program

Carpathia School Library is staffed by a teacher-librarian, Jackie Wright and library clerk, Peggy Ansons, with the assistance of parent volunteers. The library itself is a large cheerful room that lends itself to group projects, literature circles and professional meetings. The library is automated and three computer workstations, networked to the computer lab and connected to the Internet, are available for library searches and research. The library skill program focuses on information literacy and literary and cultural appreciation.

 Information Literacy

The teacher-librarian collaborates with classroom teachers to implement Literacy with Information and Communication Technology Across the Curriculum.  In particular, this involves the first two Big Ideas in the Cognitive Domain: Plan and Question and Gather and Make Sense.  In the Affective Domain the Big Ideas of Responsibility and Ethics and Collaboration will be taught in library skills programming. As students mature in their ability to think, they will analyze, evaluate and synthesize the information that they have located in accurate, authoritative print, non-print and electronic sources. Students will then present their information orally, visually, concretely, or electronically.

Literary and Cultural Appreciation

Through a wide variety of reading, viewing and listening materials, students develop a sense of story and its structure and learn to identify the author or illustrator’s strategies. They have the opportunity to study genres from different cultures and to continuously make connections between the stories they are reading and their own lives. The Parent–Child Mother Goose rhyme program is incorporated into the primary story hour.

All children from Nursery age up freely choose reading materials for recreational and study purposes that have been selected for their quality by the teacher-librarian. Students may check them out for one school cycle with the possibility of renewal. The Carpathia School elementary library program aims to develop a love of reading and lifelong learning.
